M&A report - The European Internet Industry 2016
We are very pleased to send you our report “The European Internet Industry 2016: M&A, Growth Equity & IPO” today, which we prepared in cooperation with our Globalscope partner in London.
Together with our European Globalscope partners we analysed the M&A activity in the European Internet Industry in 2016 and have identified relevant market trends and headline deals.
After taking a deep breath in 2015, M&A activity in the European internet industry picked up against last year reaching a total of 623 deals in the course of 2016. Despite the increase in European deal count, the number of deals involving German targets decreased causing Germany to lose its pole positon in Europe to the UK. International interest in Southern and Eastern European targets hiked tremendously by 46% and 63% respectively whereas Czech targets took the lion’s share in the Eastern European upswing. A view to the buyers’ sphere shows that the leading position of the US remains unchallenged whereas one third of US deals were directed towards the mature internet industry of the UK. China and Hong Kong, whose deal count tripled, are the parvenus amongst buyers and produced some of the headline Internet deals of the year (e.g. Supercell, Skyscanner, Opera, Smaato). Internet IPOs had a rather rough year compared to the NASDAQ benchmark.
